Cum Laude Inductions

Described as having been nurtured toward their dreams by family and teachers, eight seniors were inducted into select membership at the 24th annual Cum Laude ceremony on Friday, May 8. Cum Laude is a national honorary society which recognizes and encourages superior academic achievement in the nation’s finest secondary schools. However, the girls were lauded not just for their GPAs, their numerous honors and their Advanced Placement courses; they were also recognized for their high goals and their mix of temerity, audacity, imagination, curiosity, and capacity to share.

In the early morning assembly attended by the student body, teachers, and their families, each girl was introduced by a faculty member of her choosing, as much an honor for the teacher as for the new inductee.

The inductees and the faculty members who spoke poetically and inspiringly about them were Mary Beth Booker, Catherine Bolden; Ania Giffin, Scott Warren; Melissa Justo, Katy Berotti; Madison Powers, Jane Henegar; Callie Smith, Marla Neal; Chelsey Smith, Jill Pala; Kristi Walter, John Woods; and Amanda Wheelock, David Cook.

The seniors, who will wear a blue stole at Commencement on Friday, May 15, have made extracurricular contributions to GPS in community service, athletics, the Honor Council, Model UN, Key Club, fine arts, and publications; and they have been tapped for inclusion in National Honor Society and recognized by the National Merit program. They have been accepted into diverse universities from Dartmouth in New Hampshire to Denison in Ohio, and they will most assuredly make the same kind of impression on their new college campuses in the fall that they have made on GPS.
