GPS Sends Nine to Girls State

Four juniors from GPS will join almost 500 other rising high school seniors from May 24-30 at the American Legion Auxiliary’s 63rd annual session of Volunteer Girls State on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University. Laura Laughlin, Claire Samuels, Elle Wiggins, and Norquata Allen (not pictured) will spend one week at the leadership and citizenship-training program for young women. According to the ALA, the Tennessee program is “nationally recognized as one of the top Girls State programs in the nation” where young women are provided with “the opportunity to form and run a mock government by meeting, living, and working with other young female leaders from across the state.

Three past Girls State delegates from GPS will serve as junior counselors for this year’s program: Emily Blevins, Hillary Holmes, and Laura Wagner. GPS biology teacher Jenise Gordon will serve as Citizenship Director of the 2009 event, and graphic design/drama teacher Suzanne Smartt is a long time member of the staff working with the vesper/assembly team.
